While Smithers might be known as “a town for all seasons,” September is, in fact, the most coveted time of year to visit. Late summer often offers clear skies and enjoyable temperatures. Most notably, September is when the Bulkley Valley’s rivers fill with the migrating salmon and steelhead that make the area a world-class fishing destination. It’s also a great time of year to explore the area’s waterways. During the conference week, delegates can show their conference nametags and receive the following discounts at businesses in the Smithers area. Plan to stay beyond the conference dates and explore a piece of northern B.C.
Fishing
Fly fishing on the Kispiox River is legendary and the Bearclaw Lodge at the Cliffs at Kispiox River provides luxury accommodations in this pristine, wilderness setting. Totem poles tower in the foyer in front of the three-storey river rock fireplace. Spacious bedrooms featuring handmade burl furniture overlook the world-renowned Kispiox River and majestic Baldy Mountain. Fine dining featuringexecutive chef Ali Howard, garden fresh vegetables and locally grown beef and fresh seafood. Friendly and professional staff will bring your favourite beverage to your room for your wake up call each morning. Enjoy river rafting and a shore lunch with our experienced guides. Ride horses or go hiking on our more than 20 miles of scenic trails. The Bearclaw is offering $200/night, plus meals, for conference participants. (Regular rate is $300/night.) For information, please call 604-629-9578 or 250-847-9300 (www.kispioxriver.com).
