Register Now – Mountain Pine Beetle: From lessons learned to community-based solutions Conference
Time is running out to regsiter for this FORREX Conference. Join us to listen, contribute, explore, and discuss what we have learned as a result of the past four years of research and other initiatives aimed at addressing the biological, environmental, and socio-economic questions and challenges associated with current mountain pine beetle epidemic, and how we can use this information to help us better plan and manage our natural resources now and in the future.

Key questions to be addressed at the conference include:

  • How do natural disturbances such as the mountain pine beetle influence the dynamics of the ecosystems in which they occur, and by how much?
  • What are the future forests in the areas affected by the mountain pine beetle going to look like?
  • Will the forests and ecosystems continue to provide the economic benefits, traditional non-timber products, ecological, and cultural services that we are accustomed to and expect from our forests?

This report summarizes gathered information on research and extension activities addressing the needs of practitioners around the province to help determine if the needs for research on mountain pine beetle to combat the current infestation are being adequately addressed. Impacts of Climate Change on British Columbia's Biodiversity

The article summarizes research on current and potential impacts of climate change on biodiversity in British Columbia. The review brings together the relevant information contained in those publications for the benefit of natural resource managers. The review also summarizes research on how to mitigate climate change impacts on biodiversity. Mitigation will require implementing conservation principles, reducing non-climate stressors, providing latitudinal and elevational migration corridors, and instituting long-term monitoring to define causality between climate change and biotic responses. Perhaps the most important single piece of advice to natural resource and biodiversity managers is to implement, to the extent possible, good conservation practices. Regenerated Lodgepole Pine Trial: Analysis of Crop Performance Five Growing Seasons After Planting

Between the summer of 2000 and the spring of 2002, 9 member companies of the Foothills Growth and Yield Association installed and planted 102 one-hectare research plot clusters throughout the Eastern Slopes, in a large replicated experiment designed to monitor stand development of harvest-origin lodge pole pine. The data and analyses are being used to provide an improved basis for forecasting achievement of reforestation establishment and performance targets.
